Refer a Patient

NCI's trial-related treatment does not replace the care of a patient's regular physician/health care professional. NCI:

  • Encourages patients to maintain close contact with their physicians/health care professionals to ensure continuity of care
  • Generates a letter updating the referring physician/health care professional after each patient visit
  • Emphasizes the exchange of clinical information between investigators and community-based physicians/health care professionals

To make a referral, follow one of the two procedures outlined below:

  1. Identify trials appropriate for your patient by reviewing the clinical trial summaries
  2. For more information on a particular trial or to discuss a screening visit, contact a member of the research team listed in the trial’s summary

OR

  1. Call the Clinical Trials Referral Office (CTRO) at 1-888-NCI-1937 with your patient's diagnosis
  2. Have the CTRO identify and provide you with contact information for referral coordinators or study teams conducting trials for your patient's diagnosis
  3. Have the CTRO staff transfer you to the designated referral coordinator or study team to discuss your patient's medical history and possible clinical trials
